WhatsApp remains one of the three most popular apps for communication - its monthly audience exceeds 3 billion people. This news was shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg as part of the discussion of the results of the first quarter of 2025.

Here's What We Know

WhatsApp is one of Meta's most important assets. The company acquired the app in 2014 for $19bn, which seemed like an extremely bold investment, but now we can clearly state that it has paid off.

WhatsApp remains a free app and doesn't show adverts, but has generated $510m in revenue thanks to its enhanced capabilities for business accounts.

Meta is actively developing AI capabilities in its apps and the company's CFO Susan Li said that it is the messenger that has recorded the highest engagement with Meta AI, with the majority of conversations with the AI assistant occurring in private chats.

WhatsApp's Business division WhatsApp Business is testing new AI tools for businesses, including chatbot management. According to Lee, Meta is developing an interface and dashboard to train enterprise AI on companies' own data - for example, information from websites, WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook profiles. An experiment is also underway to embed AI assistant into customer correspondence.

Meta plans to further develop the messenger with a special focus on strengthening security and expanding opportunities for business communications.
