The Mexican government has kept its promise and filed a lawsuit against Google to return the historical name of the Gulf of Mexico on its maps.

Recall that in the first days of his administration Donald Trump signed a decree according to which the Gulf of Mexico is called the Gulf of America. The President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum immediately protested and demanded from Google not to execute Trump's order because of its absurdity, but her demands were ignored and since February 2025 Google Maps users from the USA see only the new name of the Gulf, while for Mexicans the usual name remained, which is the most common since XVI century, and for users of the rest of the world both names are displayed.

Here's What We Know

The President of Mexico insists that no country in the world can arbitrarily change international geographical names and asks the court to recognise Google's actions as unlawful. After that, the politician demands to return the historical name to the Gulf of Mexico.

On 9 May 2025, the US House of Representatives approved a bill that approves the name "Gulf of America".
