Toyota's only all-electric car in America at the moment, the bZ4X, will get a significant update for the 2026 model year. In addition to improved technical stuff and point changes to the exterior, the model will change its name: it will now be called simply Toyota bZ.

Here's What We Know

New battery and increased range

The main innovation is a lithium-ion battery with increased capacity (up to 74.7 kWh), available for XLE FWD Plus, XLE AWD and Limited (FWD and AWD) versions. The manufacturer estimates that these configurations will be able to travel up to 314 miles (505 kilometres) on a full charge. The base XLE FWD version will remain with a 57.7 kWh battery.

Also new on all versions is a function to preheat the battery before charging at a DC station, which is particularly useful in cold climates. The function is activated manually or automatically if the route in the navigation is routed to a fast charging station.

Charging: faster, easier

The 2026 model year Toyota bZ will get the Tesla NACS connector, providing access to thousands of Supercharger fast charging stations across the U.S. and Canada. Under ideal conditions, you can charge the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes. Plug Charge technology is also implemented - the car is automatically identified at supported charging stations, eliminating the need to use different mobile apps.

Improved dynamics

The eAxle's powertrains have been upgraded, now utilising silicon carbide (SiC) in the semiconductors, improving efficiency and power:

  • All-wheel drive (AWD) versions now develop 338bhp. - 50 per cent more than before, and accelerate from a standing start to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.9 seconds.
  • Front-wheel drive (FWD) modifications have also seen a boost in power, with 221bhp versus the previous 201.

Updated design and interior

Toyota has slightly updated the exterior of the electric crossover. New front optics with slim DCDs integrated into the front bumper. Changed wheel arches with optional painted trim. Overall, the bZ now looks more minimalist from the outside.

The interior features a new centre console, two wireless chargers at the front, a larger 14-inch multimedia screen, improved finishes and 64-colour customisable interior lighting.

When on sale?

The updated Toyota bZ will start arriving at dealers in the second half of 2025. Prices will be announced closer to the start of sales.

What about in Europe.

Interestingly, in Europe, the updated Toyota bZ4X was unveiled back in March and despite the design and technical changes, it retained its original name.
