A record in Germany: more than 37.5 million people play video games, the average age of gamers exceeds 39

Germany's gaming industry has set a new historical record: in 2025, the country has more than 37.5 million players. The number of gamers over the age of 60 is growing particularly rapidly, bringing the average age of the gaming audience to over 39 for the first time.
Here's What We Know
According to a study conducted by YouGov Shopper, Nielsen IQ, and data.ai on behalf of The German Games Industry Association, about 59% of Germans aged 6 to 69 regularly play video games on consoles, PCs, or smartphones. This is 9% more than in 2020, and the highest figure on record.
The segment of so-called "silver gamers" is growing especially fast: the number of players over 60 increased from 6.4 to 7.7 million over the year. Experts explain this not only by the fact that the older generation is discovering games, but also by the fact that those who grew up playing video games in the 80s and 90s remain loyal to the hobby even in adulthood.
The average age of a player in Germany is currently 39.5 years old, which is the first time it has exceeded the 39-year mark (in 2023 it was 38.2 years old). At the same time, 79% of gamers in the country are adults over 18.
The gender balance in the German gaming community remains almost perfect: 52% of players are men and 48% are women. This indicates that video games have long ceased to be entertainment for teenagers or a single gender.
