European regulators have launched an investigation into Pornhub and three other sites for failing to protect against underage access.

Here's What We Know

The European Commission (EC) accuses Pornhub, Stripchat, XNXX, and XVideos of violating the Digital Services Act (DSA), in particular, of not having effective age restriction measures.

According to the EC, all four sites allow EU users to view content by confirming their age with the click of a button, which is not enough to prevent access by minors. This has raised concerns about children's online safety.

In response, Pornhub stated that it fully supports the safety of children on the Internet and adheres to the recommendations of the Association of Sites for the Advancement of Children (ASACP). The company believes that the real solution is age verification at the device level, not just on the website.

EC representative Thomas Regnier emphasised: "Children should not have access to pornographic content. That is why the Commission has launched an investigation today." The next step will be an in-depth inspection, and if the violations are confirmed, the company faces fines of up to 6% of its annual global turnover.

The EC also announced that starting next month, Stripchat will be regulated by Cyprus, where its parent company is based, due to the loss of its status as a platform with more than 45 million users. However, the site is currently still under investigation by the European Commission.
