At the beginning of June, Excalibur Army will start assembling CAESAR 8×8 self-propelled artillery systems with up to 40% local content and a focus on strengthening the Czech defence industry.

Here's What We Know

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the system's developer, KNDS (KMW+Nexter Defence Systems). Prior to the start of production, Excalibur Army specialists were trained at the KNDS plant in Roanne, France, which allows them to meet the assembly schedule.

Several Czech companies are involved in the production: Retia is responsible for the installation of communication and fire control systems, Tatra Defence Vehicles and Tatra Trucks for the cab and chassis. In addition, STV is working on the certification of Czech 155 mm shells for the new artillery systems.

To ensure quality training for crews, CAESAR is equipped with the MRCT system, a mixed reality training simulator. It allows the crews to practice all actions without a real combat vehicle.

The Czech Army ordered 52 CAESARs in 2021 and increased the order by 10 more units at the end of 2022. The contract, worth CZK 10.3 billion (about $451 million), provides for the delivery of all vehicles by the end of 2026.

The key innovation was the choice of an 8×8 chassis manufactured by Tatra instead of the basic 6×6 chassis. This decision allowed for an increase in ammunition, improved cross-country ability, and increased crew protection, which are critical characteristics in modern warfare.

Although the project is focused on the needs of the Czech army, the experience of localising production and adapting Western equipment to the local industry could potentially become an example for other countries, including Ukraine.
