Toyota Aygo X: hybrid transformation of a small car

The Japanese carmaker has unveiled a radically updated version of the compact Aygo X model. Now it is equipped exclusively with a hybrid powertrain.
Here's What We Know
The heart of the novelty is the proven 1.5-litre hybrid system from the Yaris and Yaris Cross models. The four-cylinder unit paired with an electric motor develops 85 kW (116 hp), which radically changes the character of the car. Acceleration to 100 km/h now takes less than 10 seconds against the previous 14.9. Recall that the previous version was equipped with a 1.0 litre petrol motor with a capacity of 72 hp. Together with it, the possibility to choose a manual transmission disappears. All versions receive a stepless automatic gearbox of planetary type.

However, the electrified drive does not change the wheelbase. At 2.43 metres in length, the car remains short and manoeuvrable. Overall, however, the new Aygo X has grown by 76 millimetres, increasing its overall length to 3.78 metres. This is 36 centimetres longer than the first generation Aygo from 2005.
The front end of Toyota's smallest model is more in line with the look of the current range. The headlights have become narrower, the light signature continues the design of the strip between the bonnet and bumper. In addition, the bonnet and grille have been modified.

The interior has undergone a moderate modernisation. Traditional arrow gauges have been replaced by a compact digital display, and USB-C ports have been added under the climate control unit. On the steering wheel there are updated control keys of safety systems. The driver's attention monitoring system, mandatory for the EU, has received an infrared sensor on the steering column.
Hybrid modernisation will inevitably affect the cost. Company representatives have not yet disclosed specific figures, but emphasise the focus on total cost of ownership, including fuel economy. It would be nice if it stays below the psychological level of 20,000 euros.
GR Sport version
The Toyota Aygo range will be joined by a GR Sport version with a revised chassis, sharper steering settings and aggressive styling. But a full-fledged GR model is not planned - Toyota believes that 116 hp is enough for interesting dynamics comparable to the iconic VW Up GTI or Fiat Panda.

It is expected that the new version of Toyota Aygo X will appear on the roads of Europe by the end of 2025.
