Subaru has long had hybrids and even an all-electric crossover, but there hasn't been a Range Extender vehicle. Until now. This week, Subaru quietly launched such a model in its home market of Japan. The new powertrain appeared under the bonnet of perhaps the brand's most boring car.

Here's What We Know

Range Extender became available for the car, which is sold only in Japan. It is one of the variants of the model known as the Toyota Raize, Perodua Ativa and Daihatsu Rocky with a small 1.2-litre non-turbo motor. The updated version gets a Subaru e-Smart Hybrid powertrain.

The same 1.2-litre engine is now used to power the hybrid system. The combustion engine produces 80bhp and 105Nm of torque, while the single electric motor that spins the wheels produces 105bhp and 170Nm. Details about the battery Subaru has not revealed.

According to the company, the new Rex version consumes just 3.5 litres of fuel per 100 km. One of the factors for such economy is the weight of the car is only 1060-1070kg depending on the equipment. The Rex will be sold in G-Hybrid and Z-Hybrid versions. The first will get 16-inch wheels, the second - 17-inch. Prices start at 2,015,000 yen (about $14,100) and go up to 2,608,100 yen ($18,200). Subaru expects to sell 220 cars a month across Japan.
