Fiat has confirmed that production of the new 500 Hybrid with a petrol engine and six-speed manual will begin in November. Production will start at the Mirafiori plant in Turin, where they plan to assemble more than 100,000 cars a year. On sale will be both hatchback and convertible.

Here's What We Know

The first official photos without camouflage show that the hybrid looks almost like an electric version of the 500e. The main difference is the modified grille. Under the bonnet is a familiar 1.0-litre three-cylinder Firefly unit with mild-hybrid system. The same is fitted to the Fiat Panda and the previous generation 500.

The interior is completely the same as the electric version, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a new enlarged niche in the front fascia and an elevated gear lever close to the steering column as on the previous petrol 500.

The car is equipped with a full range of safety systems. These include automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and traffic sign recognition, as well as other features designed for peace of mind on city roads.

In parallel, Fiat is investing €100m in updating the 500e: the platform will be redesigned for new batteries to reduce the cost of the model. The updated electric car is expected by around 2026.
