BMW i5 LWB sedan coming soon to another country
BMW is preparing to launch the electric i5 sedan with a long wheelbase (LWB) in India in early 2026. The model will be assembled at the BMW plant in Chennai, next to the iX1.
What is known
The BMW i5 LWB will be the brand’s first fully electric sedan produced in India. This model is based on the i5 LWB, which is already sold in China. In the 5 Series lineup, the new product will be positioned between the current versions of the 530Li and the i5 M60.
Specifically for India, BMW has prepared several changes for the i5 LWB. Preliminary tests showed that the Chinese version of the model has a suspension that is too soft and insufficient ground clearance for Indian conditions. As a result, vehicles were hitting speed bumps on the roads. In response, BMW increased the clearance and reworked the i5 LWB chassis, pushing the launch schedule back by almost a year.
The Indian version of the i5 is expected to be available in the eDrive40L version with a rear engine producing 340 hp and 430 Nm of torque, paired with a 97 kWh battery. In China, this configuration provides a range of up to 713 km according to the CLTC cycle, although real-world mileage will be less.
More detailed information on the BMW i5 in the Indian specification will be available as the launch date approaches.
