GoPro Unveils Mission 1: Transforming Action Cameras into Compact Cinema Powerhouses with 1-Inch Sensor and 8K Capabilities
GoPro announced a new flagship camera series Mission 1, effectively moving the brand's devices from the "action camera" category to the "compact cine cameras" class. The novelty received a long-awaited large sensor, a new processor, and capabilities that were previously available only to professional equipment.
Main innovation: 1” sensor and GP3 chip
The basis of GoPro Mission 1 is a new 50 MP sensor measuring 1 inch. This radically improved the shooting quality in low light and provided a dynamic range of up to 14 stops. A completely new GP3 processor, significantly more efficient than its predecessors, is responsible for image processing.
Key features of Mission 1:
- 8K recording at 30 FPS and 4K up to 120 FPS (in Open Gate 4:3 mode);
- slow-motion: 1080p at 240 FPS for smooth slow-mo;
- support for 10-bit color, HLG HDR, and the new GP-Log2 logarithmic profile for professional color correction;
- support for 32-bit audio recording with Float audio technology (via new microphone ecosystem) and improved built-in four-microphone system;
- new OLED display on the rear panel is 14% larger and brighter than previous Hero series models.
Reliability and autonomy
Despite its cinematic ambitions, Mission 1 stays true to its action camera roots and withstands immersion to a depth of 20 meters without an additional box. The new Enduro 2 battery provides record operating time — over 3 hours when recording 4K and more than 5 hours in 1080p mode. The buttons have become larger and more tactile, simplifying camera control with gloves.
Ecosystem and versions
Along with the base Mission 1, the company introduced the Mission 1 Pro version (supporting 8K60 and 4K240) and the unique Mission 1 Pro ILS model, which received an interchangeable mount for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) standard lenses.
New accessories were also announced: a wireless microphone system, an advanced Media Mod, and reinforced grips with built-in batteries.
When to expect
Sales of the basic GoPro Mission 1 model will start in the third quarter of 2026. The senior Pro model will be available for pre-order on May 21. Exact prices for the European and American markets will be announced in the coming days at the NAB 2026 exhibition, but analysts predict a price range from $600 to $900 depending on the configuration.
