Dyson’s new $300 Supersonic Travel is the carry-on upgrade your hair deserves
Dyson just launched a smaller, travel-ready version of its iconic hair dryer designed to fit into a crowded carry-on. The new Supersonic Travel is 30% smaller than the original model and carries a $300 price tag, making it a more affordable entry point into the brand’s ecosystem. For frequent flyers, this means finally ditching the weak, hair-scorching blow-dryers found in most hotel bathrooms.
The size problem
Standard high-end hair dryers are notoriously bulky, often forcing travelers to choose between salon-quality results and extra space for shoes. Dyson claims to have solved this by reducing the body size by 32% and cutting the weight by 25% compared to the standard Supersonic. The unit weighs just 330 grams (about 0.7 lbs), which is roughly the weight of two large smartphones.
Despite the smaller footprint, it retains the V9 digital motor. This motor spins at 110,000 RPM (rotations per minute), creating a high-pressure jet of air to dry hair quickly. To prevent heat damage, a built-in sensor measures the air temperature 100 times every second, ensuring the heat never exceeds safe levels for your hair's protein structure.
Power across borders
The most practical feature for international travelers is the universal voltage support. Most US hair dryers operate on 110V, meaning they either won't work or will literally melt if plugged into a 230V outlet in Europe or the UK without a heavy voltage converter. The Supersonic Travel is engineered to handle 100V to 240V automatically.
This means the performance stays consistent whether you are in New York, London, or Tokyo. You will still need a physical plug adapter for different wall outlets, but the internal electronics handle the power difference without losing airflow strength or risking a short circuit.
The price of convenience
At $300, the Travel model is significantly cheaper than the $429 flagship Supersonic. While still a premium investment, it includes the brand's signature magnetic attachments for styling and smoothing. The ergonomic design places the motor in the handle rather than the head, which prevents arm fatigue during longer styling sessions.
While some may find it hard to justify the cost for a secondary travel device, the combination of heat protection and international compatibility makes it a specialized tool for those who prioritize hair health while on the road. It is currently available for order through Dyson's official site.
