Rumors have repeatedly appeared on the internet that in addition to the remaster/remake of Fallout 3, publisher Bethesda is preparing a similar re-release of Fallout: New Vegas — a favorite part of many franchise fans. However, the lead writer and one of the game designers of the 2008 game, Chris Avellone, shared an unexpected point of view.

What is known

Avellone believes that there is nothing behind the rumors about the updated version of Fallout: New Vegas, as such a project is impossible. The developer noted that Bethesda does not have the game's source code, and without it, creating a remaster is excluded. And the reason the publisher doesn't have the code is simple — the former head of Obsidian Entertainment, Feargus Urquhart, refused to hand it over. Bethesda even offered additional payment when buying the studio, but even this did not convince the head to part with the source code, and now, as Avellone is convinced, the code is either completely lost or fragmented.

Considering this circumstance, Chris Avellone asserts that even if Bethesda wants to release New Vegas — its developers simply cannot do it. The only option is to recreate the game as a full-fledged remake, but that would be an unjustifiably expensive project.

However, in the gaming community, there is an opposite opinion: many mention Oblivion Remastered, where modern graphics and visual effects are overlaid as if on top of the original game, and the original engine calculates game mechanics and other tasks. Theoretically, nothing prevents Bethesda from repeating this trick with Fallout: New Vegas, but Avellone stands his ground, claiming that even in this case the source code is necessary.
