Without waiting for the official release of the stable version of Android 17, Google has already started the next stage of development and released the first beta version of Android 17 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release). This update lays the foundation for a major feature patch (Feature Drop) expected in September.

What's new in Beta 1

At this stage, Google is focused on fixing bugs identified during the main testing cycle of Android 17:

  • fixed a critical printing service error that caused crashes when the printer's ink level was low;
  • resolved an issue with the “Terminal” app that could cause the device to become unresponsive (ANR);
  • addressed issues with audio distortion and phasing in VoIP applications, and fixed direct audio output crashes via AIDL HAL;
  • began integrating new APIs and features that will be part of the fall Pixel Feature Drop update.

The Android 17 QPR1 beta is available for the following Pixel devices:

  • Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7a
  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a
  • Pixel Tablet and original Pixel Fold.

To install the beta version, you need to register your device in the Android testing program.

Future Plans

This early launch of the QPR branch supports rumors that the stable version of Android 17 may be released earlier than usual — in June 2026. Google will reveal the main details about the system's final features at the Google I/O 2026 conference, which will be held on May 19-20.

Note! QPR versions are considered more stable than the main “betas,” but users are still advised to make backup copies of their data before installation. Android Beta Program participants can get the update "over the air" (OTA) now.
