Frogwares has confirmed that The Sinking City 2 launches August 18, 2026 on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S — and a free one-hour prologue demo is live on Steam right now. The announcement came during the Future Games Show, where the Kyiv-based studio also dropped a new trailer. If you liked the first game's Lovecraftian atmosphere but wanted something scarier and tighter, this sequel is worth watching closely.

Not a detective game anymore

The original Sinking City was a third-person detective game with clunky shooting bolted on. The sequel drops that formula entirely. per GamesRadar, Frogwares is repositioning the series as survival horror — think classic Resident Evil structure, set in a flooded 1920s Arkham. You play as Calvin Rafferty, who arrives in the city looking for an old friend and ends up tangled in a chthonic cult, fish-people crawling onto land, and creatures that resist easy description. Monster design sounds like the right kind of repulsive.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, which shows in the high-detail visuals and facial animations seen in the trailer. The combat system has been rebuilt from scratch to match the survival horror pivot.

The free demo covers Rafferty's arrival in Arkham — essentially the game's prologue — and gives a solid read on tone and controls before you commit to a purchase.

Made under extraordinary circumstances

Frogwares' story is hard to ignore. The studio has been developing games in Kyiv throughout Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022. It previously crowd-funded Sherlock Holmes: Awakened via Kickstarter during that period. The Sinking City 2 followed the same path: a 2025 Kickstarter campaign hit its €100,000 goal within hours and ultimately raised €554,002 from 6,181 backers.

The studio is also self-publishing for the first time. Frogwares spent years in a legal dispute with former publisher Nacon over IP rights, regaining control of the franchise in 2024. That independence means the team keeps full creative and commercial control going forward.

What to know before August 18

The game arrives on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S simultaneously. Retail pricing hasn't been announced yet — all storefronts list the price as TBA — but the demo on Steam is free and available now. If you're on the fence, GameReactor notes the studio head has spoken openly about how wartime conditions shaped the game's darker direction. That context makes the August release date feel like more than just a calendar entry.
