Insta360 Luna Ultra: Leica optics and 8K video in a pocket gimbal camera
Insta360 has launched the Luna Ultra, its first traditional gimbal camera, built in collaboration with Leica. It shoots 8K video, carries a dual-lens system, and ships with a detachable OLED remote screen — a combination that has no direct equivalent from DJI right now. At $769.99 in the US, it costs more than a GoPro but targets creators who need filmmaker-grade tools in a 200-gram body.
The hardware
The Luna Ultra centres on a 1-inch main sensor paired with a Leica Summicron lens. A second telephoto lens uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor and supports up to 12x zoom, with 6x optical-quality zoom before any quality loss. Video tops out at 8K/30fps with Dolby Vision and a 10-bit I-Log colour profile for post-production grading. Dynamic range is rated at 14 stops. Still photos reach 37MP, and the camera can stitch 200MP panoramas.
Stabilisation combines triple-axis mechanical gimbal suspension with electronic image stabilisation on top. Insta360's Deep Track 5.0 handles AI subject tracking, auto-framing, group tracking, and subject-lock — category firsts for a gimbal camera, per Engadget.
The detachable screen
The standout physical feature is a removable 2-inch OLED display. Detach it and it becomes a wireless monitor and remote control that works up to 20 metres (66 feet) away — useful for solo creators filming themselves without a tripod operator.

Pro workflow, pocket size
Leica's involvement goes beyond branding. The camera includes Leica Natural, Vivid, and Chrome colour profiles alongside ACES, the professional colour management standard used in film production. Timecode sync, Adobe Premiere Pro integration, and Final Cut Pro compatibility make it a plausible fit for small production teams, not just social media shooters.
Battery life is rated at four hours from a 1,550mAh cell, with an 80% charge in around 23 minutes. Storage is 47GB built-in, expandable via microSD up to 1TB — worth noting given how fast 8K footage fills a drive.

Price and availability
The Luna Ultra is available now at $769.99 from Insta360.com, Amazon, and Best Buy. UK pricing is unconfirmed at launch but works out to roughly £575 at current exchange rates, per T3 Review. The EU price is expected at €799, though German availability is delayed to a later date. The closest rival, DJI Osmo Pocket 4, sells for around £445/$449 but lacks a second lens and has no equivalent detachable screen. DJI's rumoured Pocket 4P has not yet launched.
For creators who have outgrown smartphone cameras but don't want to carry a mirrorless kit, Luna Ultra makes a credible case — if the Leica name and dual-lens setup justify the premium over what DJI currently offers.
