Wear OS 7 is out for Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4 — but Gemini AI isn't coming to your wrist yet
Google began rolling out Wear OS 7 to Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4 on June 17, 2026 — a free software update that adds custom widgets, real-time data on your watch face, and up to 10% better battery life. If you've been frustrated by how quickly Wear OS 6 drains your watch overnight, that last point alone makes this worth installing. The catch: the headline Gemini AI features are locked to new hardware that hasn't shipped yet.
The new features
The most practical addition is Live Updates — a persistent overlay on your watch face that surfaces real-time information without opening an app. That means live sports scores, delivery tracking, and workout progress all visible at a glance.
There's also Create My Widget, which lets you build a custom data panel by typing a plain-language request. Want a single tile showing your commute time, next calendar event, and outdoor temperature? Describe it, and Wear OS generates it. No coding required.
Google also expanded device control from the wrist. Pixel Watch owners can now manage Bluetooth headphones, home audio speakers, and Android XR smart glasses — including previewing photos taken on the glasses directly on the watch screen.
The 10% battery improvement comes entirely from software optimization, no new chip required. For a platform that has long drawn criticism for aggressive power drain, that's a meaningful win.
The Gemini ceiling
Here's the limit: the multi-step Gemini voice commands shown at Google I/O — booking a gym class, placing a restaurant order — require a dedicated neural processing unit. The Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 inside Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4 doesn't have one. Per TechTimes, those Gemini Intelligence features are limited to select new smartwatches launching later in 2026.
So if you own a current Pixel Watch, you get real improvements — just not the AI headline act.
What about Samsung?
Galaxy Watch owners are waiting on One UI 9 Watch, which is expected to bring Wear OS 7 to Samsung's lineup. SammyFans reports a speculative July 2026 date for Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, though Samsung hasn't confirmed anything officially.
Wear OS 7 is rolling out now for Pixel Watch 2, 3, and 4. Check for it under Settings → System → System update.
