Gemini Live finally has memory — but only if you're in the US

Google has added memory to Gemini Live, its real-time voice assistant mode, letting it remember details from past conversations and draw on data from connected Google services. Text-based Gemini has had this capability for over a year — Live mode is only catching up now. The catch: it's available in English only, and only for users in the United States.

What it remembers

When memory is active, Gemini Live can retain preferences and details you mention during a voice session and carry them into future conversations. It can also personalize responses using your activity across linked Google services — Search history, YouTube watch behavior, Gmail, and Workspace apps.

The feature switches on automatically if you already have Personal Intelligence enabled in standard Gemini. You can control which apps feed into it under Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps inside the Gemini app.

Catching up to the competition

ChatGPT's voice mode has offered memory for some time, making Google's Live mode a notable latecomer. The gap matters more now that Google and Apple have confirmed a partnership to bring Gemini into Siri's AI upgrade in 2026 — the more context Gemini can carry, the more useful that integration could be.

For now, Digital Trends confirms the rollout is staggered even within the US, and some Android users still see a "coming soon" label in their Personal Intelligence settings despite the feature being live. No timeline has been given for other languages or regions.

Europe stays locked out

Users in the EU — and by extension the UK post-Brexit regulatory divergence notwithstanding, broader European markets — are unlikely to see this feature soon. Google's personal-intelligence tools have faced persistent delays in Europe due to GDPR, the Digital Services Act, and incoming AI Act compliance requirements. Ireland's Data Protection Commission is already investigating Google's AI model development practices. Memory-linked features that process personal data sit in a particularly difficult position under those rules.

Google hasn't disclosed whether the memory feature is included in existing Gemini tiers or reserved for a paid plan. The Gemini Apps Help page has the full setup details for US users who have access.
