Apple's foldable iPhone Ultra: announced in September, but don't expect it on your doorstep anytime soon
Apple is set to announce its first foldable phone, the iPhone Ultra, at its September 2026 event — but the device won't actually ship until late November or December at the earliest, per Macworld. That gap between announcement and delivery is longer than Apple's usual one-week wait for Pro models, and it hands a significant head start to Samsung's competing foldable arriving this autumn.
The specs so far
The iPhone Ultra is expected to use a book-style fold: a 7.8-inch inner OLED display and a 5.3–5.5-inch cover screen. There are two 48MP rear cameras, and — notably — Touch ID replaces Face ID, which is a significant departure from Apple's recent lineup. Samsung Display began producing the OLED panels on June 22, according to The Elec, a Korean supply-chain publication. Mass production was pushed back to August from an earlier June target, suggesting yields and quality control remain a work in progress.
One open question is hinge durability. Samsung publicly rates the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to 500,000 fold cycles. Apple has published no equivalent figure, and MacRumors reports that hinge reliability is still an internal concern at the company. For a device this expensive, that's a detail worth watching.
Price and availability
Pricing is genuinely uncertain right now. Macworld's sources put the figure around $2,500, though that's described as a high-end estimate under volatile component-market conditions. The mainstream analyst consensus, led by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, converges closer to $1,999–$2,000. UK pricing, if history is any guide, would likely land around £1,699–£1,799. Neither Apple nor any UK carrier has confirmed anything.
Broad US and UK availability is not expected before Q1 2027 — initial stock in late 2026 is likely to be constrained. That timeline matters because Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 launches in October 2026, giving it a full quarter to capture the foldable-curious buyer who doesn't want to wait.
The bigger picture
Apple has been working on a foldable for years, and the September announcement will confirm the project is real. But the staggered release strategy — announce now, ship much later — is a gamble. Early adopters may simply buy the Z Fold 7 rather than wait for an unproven hinge and uncertain stock. Apple's brand loyalty is strong, but at prices north of $2,000, patience has limits.
