Huawei will launch the Mate 90 series in September 2026, two months ahead of when the Mate 70 and Mate 80 arrived. The move puts the company's next flagship directly in Apple's launch window, marking the first time in years Huawei has deliberately timed a premium phone to compete with a new iPhone on release day.

The September date comes from well-regarded tipster @RuryRen, reported by Gizmochina, who also confirmed that the previously rumored Pura 90s sub-series has been scrapped entirely. A slate of mid-range models is still expected between July and August.

The chip story

The Mate 90 is set to debut the Kirin 9050, built on what Huawei calls Logic Folding architecture. The design squeezes 238 million transistors per square millimeter — a 53.5% density improvement over its predecessor — without relying on advanced EUV lithography, the chipmaking process Huawei cannot access due to US export controls. In practical terms, Huawei is engineering around sanctions rather than waiting for them to lift.

The November delays that plagued the Mate 70 and Mate 80 were widely linked to chip supply problems. A September launch suggests those production bottlenecks have eased.

Where the Mate 90 fits

Earlier this year, Huawei launched the Pura 90 lineup — its photography-focused flagship family. The Pura 90 Pro and Pro Max arrived in April running the Kirin 9030S, followed by the standard Pura 90 in May with the Kirin 9010S. Notably, the Ultra model was dropped from that series entirely. The Mate line sits above it in Huawei's portfolio, prioritizing raw performance over camera specialization.

With the Pura 90s cancelled, Huawei is concentrating its second-half flagship effort squarely on the Mate 90 — which is now positioned to go up against the iPhone 18 Pro at the same moment Apple typically dominates tech coverage.

What's still unknown

No pricing or Western availability has been confirmed for the Mate 90. Huawei's recent flagships have had limited or unofficial distribution outside China, so prospective buyers in the US and UK should treat the September date as a China launch window for now. Whether a broader rollout follows will depend on the same geopolitical factors that have shaped Huawei's global strategy for the past several years.
