Netflix is developing a live-action Persona series

Netflix is bringing the Persona franchise to live-action TV — a significant bet on a Japanese RPG series that has sold over 30 million copies worldwide but has never been adapted for Western screens. Variety broke the story, reporting that the project is in early development with no casting or release window attached yet.

The team

Christopher Monfette is attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. His credits include Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and an upcoming Marvel Disney+ series, Vision Quest — a résumé that signals Netflix is prioritizing character-driven drama over spectacle. Production companies 21 Laps (Stranger Things) and Story Kitchen are co-producing; Story Kitchen focuses specifically on game IP adaptations and is also behind Amazon MGM's live-action Tomb Raider series. Sega's Toru Nakahara will serve as executive producer on the Persona side.

The challenge

Persona's identity is deeply tied to its anime-influenced visuals, heavy UI design, and a school-life-meets-supernatural structure that spans six mainline games. It's an aesthetic challenge that neither The Witcher nor Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had to solve — those source materials translate to live-action more naturally. What's still unknown: whether the show will adapt a specific game (Persona 3, 4, or 5 are the most widely played) or tell an original story in the same world. Netflix has not officially commented.

The wider Persona moment

The timing isn't accidental. Atlus and Sega have been pushing the franchise hard in 2026. Persona 6 was announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June without a release date, and Gematsu confirms that Persona 4 Revival — a full remake of Persona 4 Golden — launches February 18, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A Netflix series in development alongside two major game releases is a coordinated push to grow the franchise's global profile, following a strategy Sega reportedly outlined as far back as 2022 per Game Rant.

Netflix's game adaptation record is uneven — Arcane and The Witcher landed well; Resident Evil did not. Whether Persona's stylized world survives the jump to live-action depends almost entirely on decisions that haven't been made public yet.
