Huawei's $2,200 Smart Lock Has Gold Panels and Palm Vein Scanning
Huawei has unveiled the Smart Door Lock X1, a $2,200 smart lock that sits at the very top of its home security lineup. The price alone — nearly seven times what a flagship Yale or Schlage costs in the US — signals this is a luxury statement as much as a security product. It's currently available only in China through Huawei's own store.
The hardware
The X1's body uses a ceramic texture finish said to draw from traditional Chinese architecture. A decorative panel at the base is coated in 24-karat gold, and buyers can request custom engraving. Underneath the styling sits a Class C mechanical cylinder, the highest residential resistance rating for lock barrels.
Unlocking options include fingerprint, facial recognition, palm vein scanning, physical key, and temporary codes generated through Huawei's smart home ecosystem. Palm vein authentication — which maps the unique pattern of veins beneath the skin — is difficult to spoof and rarely seen in consumer locks at any price.
A dedicated HarmonyOS microchip handles secure data storage, and Huawei says the electronics are shielded against high-powered electromagnetic pulse attacks.
Specs worth noting
On the outside, a 2K camera with a 161-degree field of view lets you see the full doorstep, even if someone is standing right against the door. A 3.97-inch display on the inside shows the live feed. The 10,000 mAh battery is rated for seven months of use; four AA batteries provide a backup if you forget to charge. Huawei backs it with a five-year warranty.
The US and UK picture
Neither the US nor UK market has a confirmed launch. Huawei is absent from major retailers — Best Buy, Amazon, B&Q;, Currys — and the X1 shows no sign of Western distribution. There are no public third-party security certifications (no ANSI Grade 1, no AV-TEST equivalent) and no stated GDPR or CCPA compliance for the biometric data the lock collects.
For most buyers, the competition does the job for far less. The Schlage Encode Plus runs $200–$350 with ANSI Grade 1 certification and HomeKit support, per SafeHome.org. Nuki's Smart Lock Ultra (around $349) carries AV-TEST certification. The UK smart lock market is valued at $240M in 2026, according to Fortune Business Insights, with Yale, August, and Schlage covering the premium tier comfortably under $400.
The X1 is an impressive piece of hardware on paper. But until Huawei clears the certification and privacy hurdles that Western markets expect, it stays a curiosity rather than a contender.
