A $9 physical key that locks your most addictive apps
Autonomous, the ergonomic furniture company, has launched a $9 physical key that locks selected smartphone apps behind an NFC tap. The idea is simple: if you have to physically pick up a keychain and hold it against your phone to open TikTok or Instagram, the impulsive urge to scroll often evaporates before you get that far. The device went into beta after a Kickstarter campaign and began shipping in July 2026.
The friction device
The Autonomous Key is a small keychain fob containing a passive NFC chip — no battery, no charging ever required. You designate which apps are locked inside the companion app, and those apps stay inaccessible until you tap the key against the back of your phone. It works with most modern iPhones and Android devices without Bluetooth pairing. The appeal over iOS Screen Time or Android's Digital Wellbeing is that there's no "Ignore limit" button — unlocking requires a physical object you might have left in another room.
The app side
The companion app does more than block. It logs how often you reach for the key and how long you spend in locked apps after unlocking, then uses AI-driven analysis to surface personalized suggestions — for example, tightening evening restrictions if the data shows you habitually unlock before bed. Autonomous claims the approach can cut screen time by around 50%, though that figure comes from the manufacturer and hasn't been independently verified.
A few caveats worth knowing: TechCrunch notes the NFC scan occasionally needs more than one attempt, and if you lose the key, the current workaround is uninstalling and reinstalling the app. The company says a more robust lost-key solution is coming.
The market
At $9, Autonomous undercuts every direct competitor — Unpluq ($26.50), Blok ($29), and Brick ($59) — by a wide margin, as Notebookcheck notes. There's no subscription fee. The key comes in five colors.
The catch for anyone outside the US: Autonomous does not currently ship internationally. UK and EU buyers are locked out for now, with no confirmed timeline for international availability. Stateside, you can order directly from autonomous.ai with free shipping.
