Vivo X500: the world's first 2nm phone is coming — but not necessarily to you
Vivo's next flagship, the X500 series, will be the first phone family to run a 2nm processor — and it's shaping up to be a serious challenge to Samsung and Apple at the top of the market. The phone passed certification in China under model number V2609A, and an official announcement is expected in September 2026. Whether it reaches US or UK shelves at launch is another question entirely.
The chip
The headliner is MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro, manufactured on TSMC's N2P 2nm process — a generation ahead of the 3nm chips inside the current Galaxy S25 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Two ARM C2-Ultra cores clock up to 5.0 GHz, and early Geekbench scores put single-core performance around 4,200–4,300 — a roughly 20–25% jump over the previous generation. Vivo pairs that silicon with LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, the fastest available in both categories.
One caveat: those benchmark figures come from engineering samples. How the chip handles sustained gaming or 4K video encoding in a retail handset — where thermal throttling can blunt peak speeds — won't be known until reviewers get hold of final units.
The cameras
The X500 lineup splits into three models: standard X500 (3nm Dimensity 9500), X500 Pro, and X500 Pro Max. All three share a 50MP Sony LOFIC primary sensor, which prioritizes dynamic range over raw megapixel count. The Pro Max steps it up further with a 200MP Samsung periscope telephoto at 3.5x optical zoom — a configuration aimed squarely at toppling its own predecessor. Last year's Vivo X300 Pro still sits in the DxOMark top two; the X500 Pro Max is built to go further.
The software
OriginOS 7 debuts a "Liquid Glass" interface — semi-transparent layers, smooth depth effects, and expanded customization throughout the menu system. On the AI side, Vivo is stacking multiple models: its own BlueHeart alongside third-party services including DeepSeek, Zhipu AI, and Wenxin Yiyan. The system picks whichever model suits the task, whether that's text generation, document analysis, or real-time photo editing.
Availability
The X500 series launches in China in September 2026. Western availability is unconfirmed — Vivo has not announced US carrier partnerships or UK retail listings. Based on the X300 Pro's trajectory, a US and UK rollout two to three months after the China debut is plausible, with the X500 Pro Max likely priced above £1,200. It goes up against the Galaxy S25 Ultra and, by that point, the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Neither of those has a 2nm chip — but both have established retail presence that Vivo still lacks outside China.
