Apple's Home Hub smart display is coming — at a $350 price that invites tough questions
Apple is planning to release a smart home display called the Home Hub as early as this autumn, alongside refreshed versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K. The device is expected to cost $350 — more than three times the price of Google's Nest Hub 2 and well above Amazon's Echo Show 8. If you've been waiting for an Apple answer to the smart display market, it's almost here, but it comes with caveats.
The hardware
The Home Hub is a 7-inch square LCD display with a built-in FaceTime camera and a facial recognition system that identifies individual family members and adjusts the interface accordingly — larger icons and fonts for someone with low vision, for example. It runs a new operating system that blends watchOS, iOS, and tvOS into a grid of icons, widgets, and apps. You can use it to control HomeKit-connected devices, watch video, listen to music, make FaceTime calls, and interact with Siri. The updated HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K round out the lineup, both gaining Siri AI support, per Bloomberg (Mark Gurman, 28 July 2026).
The catch
Apple originally planned to ship the Home Hub in 2024. It slipped to spring 2026, then to autumn 2026 or early 2027 — each delay tied to unresolved problems training its Siri AI. That's a long runway for a product entering a market that Google and Amazon have owned for years at far lower prices. As Engadget notes, the $350 ask puts the Home Hub in a different bracket entirely from its main rivals: the Nest Hub Max sits at $229, and Amazon's Echo Show 8 typically sells for $180–$220. Apple will need Siri to genuinely deliver to justify that gap.
There's also a privacy dimension. Facial recognition that personalises content for each user will likely attract scrutiny under UK data protection rules, and it remains to be seen how Apple handles consent and on-device data storage in practice.
What to expect
The Home Hub will reportedly be available as a tabletop unit with a speaker base, or wall-mounted. No official pricing or exact release date has been confirmed by Apple. The autumn 2026 window is the current target, with early 2027 still possible if Siri AI development hits further snags. Given the history, a degree of patience is warranted — but the product itself, if Siri performs, could be a genuinely useful addition to any home already deep in the Apple ecosystem.
