Nokia 250 4G Smart is a keypad phone with AI — built only for China
HMD Global has announced the Nokia 250 4G Smart, a keypad phone aimed squarely at the Chinese market — at a moment when "dumb phone" interest in the US and UK is arguably at its highest in years. The device blends a classic candybar form factor with features like AI voice translation, a QR code reader, and Alipay payment support. No western launch has been announced.
The hardware
The 250 4G Smart is a straightforward monoblock: a 2.8-inch LCD, physical keypad, and IP54 dust and splash resistance. On the back sits a 2MP camera with an LED flash; the front has a 0.3MP (VGA) camera, also with its own LED — useful mainly for video calls rather than selfies. Connectivity covers 4G, Bluetooth 5.0, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and USB-C charging. The 1,950mAh battery is paired with a Unisoc T137 processor, 256MB of RAM, and 2GB of storage. That sounds minimal, but the proprietary OS doesn't need much.

A China-first feature set
The software is where HMD has tailored this phone for one market. Alipay QR payments, spam call blocking, and a "cloud phone" function are baked in alongside AI-powered voice translation, per ShiftDelete. None of those integrations translate to the US or UK — Alipay has negligible presence outside China, and there's no indication HMD plans western equivalents.
The specs were leaked by tipster @smashx_60 before any official announcement. HMD has not confirmed a price or release date, reports Gizmochina.
The missed opportunity
The timing is awkward for HMD. Interest in minimal phones in the US and UK has grown steadily — driven by screen-time anxiety, Apple's Focus modes, and a whole corner of TikTok dedicated to "dumb phone" living. Nokia's 3310 relaunch reached the US within six months of its 2017 announcement and was a cultural moment. The 250 4G Smart, by contrast, is targeting China exclusively, alongside other emerging markets where HMD is expanding its feature phone line.
Western buyers looking for a simple 4G phone are left with options from CAT, Sonim, Doro, and the existing Nokia 225 4G — none of which carry the same AI or cloud hooks HMD is pitching here. Whether HMD eventually adapts the 250's software stack for western markets remains to be seen.
