Demis Hassabis steps down as Google DeepMind CEO, Jeff Dean leaves after 27 years
Google DeepMind is getting a new boss. Demis Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and has led it ever since, is stepping down as CEO to become chairman of DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, Google's parent company. The reshuffle lands as Google faces intensifying pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic to ship AI products faster.
The new lineup
Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's current chief technology officer and a 13-year collaborator of Hassabis, steps up to Senior Vice President and takes charge of day-to-day operations. He reports directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai — a structural change that puts the Gemini model roadmap and product integration firmly on a short leash to the top. Hassabis retains leadership of Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery spinoff he runs alongside DeepMind, and keeps his focus on long-horizon research including the push toward artificial general intelligence (AGI — AI that can perform any intellectual task a human can).
Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with John Jumper, for the AlphaFold protein-structure work that came out of DeepMind.
The departure that matters
Simultaneously, Jeff Dean is leaving Google after 27 years. Dean built much of the infrastructure that modern AI runs on: Google Brain, TensorFlow, and the Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) that power large model training. He is co-founding Discovery Loop, a startup focused on AI models that can drive scientific research with minimal human input. His co-founders include Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le — all prominent names in AI research.
Google will be a founding investor in Discovery Loop and its cloud provider, per TechCrunch. The investment amount has not been disclosed. That arrangement — Google funds a spinoff that then buys Google Cloud — raises fair questions about how independent the new lab will actually be.
What this signals
Axios on DeepMind restructuring frames the changes as a direct response to competitive pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic. Elevating Kavukcuoglu consolidates model development and product delivery under one executive, trading some research independence for speed. Hassabis moves to a role where he can focus on big-picture science — but loses the operational control he has held since DeepMind's founding. Whether that tradeoff pays off depends on whether Gemini can close the gap with its rivals in the next product cycle.
