Minecraft gets a native Switch 2 version on October 27 — with better graphics and save transfer

Minecraft finally gets a proper Nintendo Switch 2 release on October 27, 2026, ending over a year of running through backward compatibility. Mojang and Microsoft confirmed the date alongside a visual overhaul called Vibrant Visuals — and existing Switch owners will have some kind of upgrade path, though pricing hasn't been announced.

The upgrade

The native Switch 2 version ships with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default. That means improved lighting, shadow effects, and overall visual fidelity out of the box, without any settings digging required. It's a meaningful step up from the backward-compatible version, which left the Switch 2's hardware largely untapped.

The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack — which brings Mario-themed worlds, music, and skins — is also getting a visual refresh to take advantage of Vibrant Visuals. Worth noting: Vibrant Visuals won't run in split-screen mode or in certain Marketplace worlds, per Nintendo Wire.

The open question

Save data transfers from the original Switch are confirmed — your worlds, progress, and builds come with you. That's a cleaner deal than many third-party Switch 2 ports have offered.

What Microsoft hasn't said yet is how much the Switch 2 edition will cost for existing owners. Official Minecraft states only that a digital upgrade path exists, with "more details to follow." The UK article suggests the upgrade could be free for digital buyers, but that hasn't been officially confirmed.

The pricing call matters more than it might seem. If Microsoft follows a PlayStation-style paid upgrade model, it could frustrate the large install base that already bought the Switch 1 version. A free or low-cost path would cement Minecraft as one of the smoother Switch 2 software transitions. Either way, the answer should arrive well before the October 27 date — and Q4 2026 is a crowded window on Switch 2, with Metaphor ReFantazio and Fire Emblem also landing in the same season.
