OpenAI gives free ChatGPT users unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna
OpenAI is removing the text message limit for free ChatGPT accounts, replacing the old 10-messages-per-5-hours cap with unlimited conversations powered by GPT-5.6 Luna. The rollout begins the week of August 10, 2026, and requires no credit card. With ChatGPT now at 1 billion weekly users, the move is a direct push to hold that audience against Claude and Gemini, both of which already offer unlimited free text.
The model: Luna, not Sol
Luna is OpenAI's entry-level GPT-5.6 variant, optimized for low latency and cost efficiency — not the same as Sol, the higher-tier model marketed for reliability and factual accuracy. OpenAI claims Luna produces 62–68% fewer factual errors than GPT-5.5, but that figure comes from internal evaluation with no published methodology or third-party validation, per SQ Magazine analysis. Take the accuracy pitch with some caution. For everyday questions, quick drafts, and coding help, Luna is capable; for high-stakes factual research, the limitations matter.

What's still capped
Unlimited applies to text only. Free users keep hitting limits on file uploads and PDF analysis, image generation via DALL-E 3, and custom GPT agents. The Think button — a step-by-step reasoning mode — is reserved for Plus and Pro subscribers. Plus costs $20/month and removes ads; free US users have seen ads in ChatGPT since February 2026, notes FelloAI. During peak hours, Plus subscribers also get faster response times.
The privacy catch
Free chats feed OpenAI's training data by default. If you'd rather your conversations not contribute to future model versions, you need to opt out manually: go to Settings → Data Controls → toggle off "Improve the model for everyone." The option exists, but it's not surfaced prominently. This default-on arrangement has drawn scrutiny from the FTC over fair-practice questions around consent. Worth upgrading?
For most casual users, Luna unlimited is genuinely useful — the old 10-message cap pushed people toward paid subscriptions faster than any feature pitch. Now the free tier is a real daily driver for text tasks. The $20/month Plus plan still makes sense if you work with documents, need DALL-E 3, or want the Sol model's stronger reasoning. Otherwise, the free upgrade on August 10 is worth trying before committing to anything.
