Sony Xperia 1 IX leaks early — eSIM-only and satellite SOS on the way
Sony's next premium phone is already in regulatory filings — more than a year before it ships. Three model codes for the Xperia 1 IX were registered in the GSMA IMEI database on August 4, 2026, per Gizmochina. The 'H' prefix in each code signals a 2027 model year under Sony's naming convention, and the '4' suffix confirms eSIM support across all three variants. For anyone considering Sony's flagship line, that last detail is the most significant change on the horizon.
Three variants, one phone
The three codes split the Xperia 1 IX by region. XQ-HH44 is the Japanese version, XQ-HH54 covers Europe — including the UK — and XQ-HH74 handles other global markets. UK buyers have historically received the European XQ-HH54 variant, and there's no reason to expect that to change.
The Japanese model stands out: it lists compatibility with 3GPP satellite communication standards, meaning it should support satellite SOS messaging without a cell tower. Japan's exposure to earthquakes and typhoons makes this a practical safety feature rather than a marketing add-on. Europe and the US are not listed for satellite support at this stage, though that could change before launch.
eSIM-only and a likely price rise
The shift to eSIM-only is the bigger story for most buyers outside Japan. Sony has historically offered physical SIM slots alongside eSIM, so dropping them entirely marks a real change in direction — one that Apple and Google have already made on high-end models. Support for physical SIM cards won't be missed by everyone, but it does mean switching carriers requires a software transfer rather than swapping a card.
There's also a cost warning. A DRAM component shortage is pushing memory prices higher industrywide, notes Notebookcheck. The Xperia 1 VIII launched at around $1,499 in the US; the IX could land meaningfully higher in 2027.
What's still unknown
No specs have leaked yet — no chipset, no camera details, no display resolution. Sony fans will hope the 4K panel and Alpha-derived camera system return, but nothing is confirmed. The early IMEI registration matches Sony's typical May–June launch window, so don't read the August filing as a sign of an earlier-than-usual debut. The Xperia 1 VIII was registered in November 2025 and still launched on schedule; the IX filing arriving in August 2026 simply means Sony is working further ahead this cycle.
