ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 goes solo at $1,299 — no AR glasses required
ASUS has reversed course on the ROG Xbox Ally X20, making the handheld available as a standalone purchase for $1,299 after months of criticism over a bundle-only strategy that forced buyers to spend $2,499 on the console plus a pair of XREAL R1 AR glasses. Pre-orders are live now through the ASUS Store and Best Buy, with units shipping October 15, 2026.
The X20 sits $300 above the existing ROG Xbox Ally X ($999.99), and that premium buys you exactly one meaningful hardware upgrade.
The display
The headline change is the screen. ASUS has swapped the Ally X's IPS panel for a 7.4-inch OLED running at 120 Hz with Nebula HDR support. OLED brings deeper blacks and better contrast — the same shift proved transformative when Valve moved the Steam Deck to OLED in 2023, even without touching the processor. ASUS also hints at "minor ergonomic and cooling refinements," but hasn't detailed them.
Under the hood
Everything else carries over unchanged from the Ally X. The processor is AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, paired with 24 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. An 80 Wh battery handles power — solid for a Windows handheld, though real-world endurance will depend heavily on what you're running.
That Windows dependency is worth flagging. At $1,299, the X20 is nearly double the price of the Steam Deck OLED ($649), which runs SteamOS. For buyers who live in Game Pass or want access to their full PC library, Windows still makes sense — but the value gap is hard to ignore.

The bundle reversal
ASUS originally debuted the X20 at Computex in June 2026 as a bundle-only product. The backlash was swift enough that per ComputerBase, the company pivoted to standalone sales by late August. The XREAL R1 glasses are still available separately at around $749 — now optional rather than mandatory.
At $1,299, the X20 is a hard sell for anyone already happy with the Ally X. But for buyers who want the best screen currently available on a Windows handheld and don't mind paying for it, the October 15 ship date gives a clear target.
