GTA VI runs at 1440p/30fps on base PS5 — and 60fps isn't happening
GTA VI will run at 1440p native resolution and 30fps on the base PS5, with full ray tracing and global illumination — and Digital Foundry has the receipts. The team spent the 26-minute gameplay trailer under a microscope, confirming these specs while calling the game's visual and simulation density one of the most impressive real-time rendering showcases they've ever seen.
The CPU ceiling
The 30fps cap isn't a creative choice — it's a hardware limit. Digital Foundry is confident that GTA VI's NPC AI and physics simulation push the PS5's Zen 2 processor to its absolute limit. Hitting 60fps would require something like a Ryzen X3D-class chip; that processor doesn't exist in any current console. The GPU isn't the bottleneck here — the CPU is, and there's no patch or mode that can change that on existing hardware.
One key detail from the analysis: Rockstar recorded the gameplay footage without any upscalers active. Digital Foundry knows this because upscaling leaves visible artifacts, and none were present. That leaves open whether the final game will support options like PSSR on PS5 Pro, though the team considers full PSSR support at launch unlikely — despite being theoretically possible.
Rockstar's pattern holds
This isn't new territory for Rockstar. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched at 30fps on consoles; better frame rates only arrived on PC or next-generation hardware. RDR2 still hasn't received an official 60fps patch on current consoles as of mid-2026.
The PC version of GTA VI has no confirmed release date. Based on TechRadar / Mike York — a former Rockstar animator — 60fps "raw out the gate" was never on the table for base consoles. The PC release, expected sometime in late 2027 or 2028 based on GTA V and RDR2 precedent, is where higher frame rates will likely land.
On Xbox, the situation is less clear. Series X is expected to land in a similar range to PS5, but Series S is predicted to drop as low as 720p with dynamic resolution scaling — a potential performance divide that echoes GTA V's multi-generation release strategy.
GTA VI launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series.
