Your Witcher 3 saves will carry over to the free remaster — with one PC catch

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launches September 29 as a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, GOG, or Battle.net for the first time), or Nintendo Switch 2. CD Projekt Red has now confirmed that your existing save files will carry over — so you won't have to start from scratch to experience the revamped version.

The saves

Save compatibility sounds simple, but it isn't. The remaster reworks Geralt's entire skill tree, which creates a conflict with saves that have already spent those skill points. CD Projekt Red hasn't spelled out exactly how the import works, but the most likely outcome — as G2A News reports — is that players will get their points refunded and can redistribute them under the new system. Quest progress and story state should transfer intact. Mods are another story: most should survive, but the studio warns that some user modifications may break due to the scale of the gameplay changes.

The PC floor

The free upgrade comes with a hardware minimum that will lock out a chunk of the existing player base. Per TechPowerUp, the remaster requires Windows 11, DirectX 12, a 70 GB SSD, and at least an Intel Core i5-8400 paired with an Nvidia GTX 1660. That eliminates machines running Windows 10 or older GPUs — a real cut-off for casual players who haven't upgraded since 2017 or 2018. There's no DirectX 11 fallback.

Cross-progression works differently depending on your platform. Xbox Play Anywhere links console and PC progress natively. PlayStation users need cloud sync to move saves across platforms, and the specifics of cross-save between, say, PS5 and Steam haven't been officially detailed by CD Projekt Red.

What else is included

Both prior expansions — Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — are now bundled in automatically and free for all base game owners, as of late August 2026. The upcoming DLC, Songs of the Past, is a separate release planned for 2027. It can be started mid-playthrough or launched from the main menu with an auto-leveled character, matching how Blood and Wine handled entry. No official price has been set; estimates based on Gamescom contest bundle values put it in the €25–35 range.

The September 29 date is firm. If your PC meets the new spec floor, the upgrade is as straightforward as it gets. If it doesn't, that's the trade-off CD Projekt Red isn't advertising alongside the "free" headline.
