Precedent from 2013
This isn't the first time a GTA release has emptied offices. When GTA V launched in 2013, surveys found that around 6% of 18–35-year-olds in New York and Los Angeles skipped work on day one. GTA VI is expected to clear that benchmark — the combined PS5 and Xbox Series install base now sits above 120 million units worldwide, far beyond what existed when GTA V dropped. The Wall Street Journal has already reported workers banking vacation days specifically for November 19, with some companies building the date into end-of-year leave packages as a perk.
The absenteeism isn't confined to office workers. A US Army lieutenant colonel told the Journal that 44 of his 130 soldiers had rescheduled contracts to free up those days — one planned to finish all chores in advance and stock up on food before diving in.
A zero-sum launch day
The $1 billion productivity estimate and Take-Two's ~$1B cash flow target for FY2027 are a striking coincidence: money lost to absenteeism is effectively money spent on the game. Wall Street is focused on the revenue side of that equation — GTA VI is Take-Two's only major release for its 2027 fiscal year, making the launch critical to the publisher's financial health.
