Sony's September 3 State of Play splits into two shows — here's what to expect
Sony has confirmed a State of Play for September 3, 2026 at 9am ET / 6am PT — earlier in the month than usual and with a format twist that splits the broadcast into two back-to-back shows. It's one of the more substantial pre-holiday showcases Sony has staged, arriving as the company tries to keep PS5 momentum going ahead of an eventual PS6 transition.
Two shows, one evening
The first half runs as a traditional State of Play, with Sony's internal studios and select partners presenting trailers and announcements. The headliner is Final Fantasy VII Revelation: Square Enix confirmed the RPG for a Spring 2027 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, and the State of Play segment will dig into its open world.
Immediately after, State of Play Japan kicks off as a separate stream dedicated to Japanese and other Asian developers. Sony set this format precedent in November 2025, and the September 3 edition marks its return — expect new trailers, gameplay demos, and announcements from that side of the industry.
The first-party picture
Beyond FF VII Revelation, Sony's own lineup is the bigger draw. God of War: Laufey has a locked date — February 16, 2027, PS5 exclusive — announced by Santa Monica Studio at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Whether it appears at State of Play is unconfirmed, but a new trailer would fit the timing.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog is targeting 2027 per insider sourcing, though Sony hasn't officially confirmed a window. Until Dawn 2 and action RPG Phantom Blade Zero — which Sony has backed heavily in marketing — are also rumored for appearances, though no new details have surfaced.
How to watch
The show streams live on YouTube and Twitch starting at 9am ET on September 3. Sony hasn't announced a runtime for either segment, so set aside a couple of hours if you want to catch both State of Play and State of Play Japan in full.
It's a busy slate on paper. How much of it translates into firm release dates — rather than extended trailers — is the real question come September 3.
