NVIDIA DLSS 5 launches September 3 — but neural rendering comes with a performance cost

NVIDIA's DLSS 5 arrives on September 3, bringing a new layer of AI called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW Ultimate. The first supported game is NBA 2K27. If you own an RTX 40 or RTX 30 card, there's no confirmed support at launch — and early independent tests suggest the feature comes with a real performance trade-off.

The tech

Previous DLSS versions were mainly about boosting frame rates through upscaling and frame generation. DLSS 5 adds something different: the AI reads the finished frame and motion vectors from the 3D engine, identifies what's in the scene — skin, cloth, metal, hair, leaves — and then draws in physical lighting effects that developers typically skip to save performance. Think soft light passing through skin, realistic contact shadows, and accurate light scatter across fabric and hair.

NVIDIA stresses that the underlying 3D geometry never changes, and that the neural effects are locked to the engine's motion vectors so they don't shimmer or drift between frames. After backlash from a March demo that showed over-smoothed faces, the company added developer controls — intensity sliders and masking tools — so studios can limit which parts of a scene the AI touches.

The claim vs. the tests

NVIDIA official quotes 370 FPS at 4K on the RTX 5090. That number includes the full DLSS stack: Super Resolution plus Multi Frame Generation on top of neural rendering — not neural rendering working alone. NBA 2K27 leak benchmarks show 200+ FPS on the RTX 5090, which is more representative of the rendering layer itself.

The harder number comes from GameGPU independent testing: Cyberpunk 2077 dropped from 63 to 42 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 with neural rendering active — a 33% cut on the fastest consumer GPU available. NVIDIA says it achieved a 5× speed improvement in neural rendering between March and September, but the performance tax is still measurable even on top-end hardware.

What this means right now

RTX 5090 stock is thin in the US and UK; most buyers are looking at the RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti, and there are no published benchmarks for those cards with DLSS 5 neural rendering active. AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS don't offer an equivalent feature, so NVIDIA holds the only implementation — but it's an RTX 50 exclusive, and adoption depends almost entirely on how many studios integrate it beyond NBA 2K27. No second-wave titles have been confirmed yet.
