iOS 27 lands September 14 — but Siri AI is blocked in the EU at launch
iOS 27 rolls out on September 14, 2026, for every compatible iPhone from the iPhone 11 onwards. Apple's biggest software update in years brings a revamped Siri powered by generative AI, but users in the EU — including the UK — won't get that flagship feature at launch because of ongoing regulatory hurdles. Everyone else gets 250-plus new features on day one.
The new Siri
The centerpiece of iOS 27 is a fully rebuilt Siri that uses generative AI models developed in partnership with Google and Nvidia. It's designed to handle complex, multi-step requests — think booking a restaurant while checking your calendar — rather than just setting timers and playing music. Apple has spent several years on the retraining, and Craig Federighi has publicly expressed frustration that European regulation is holding the rollout back.
For US users on T-Mobile, there's an additional perk: iPhone Handoff, a new dual-number switching feature that lets you juggle two lines across devices. No other US carrier has announced support yet.
What's actually available everywhere
Strip out the AI assistant and iOS 27 still delivers a meaningful upgrade. App launch times are 30% faster, and AirDrop file transfers move 80% quicker — both improvements land on every supported device on September 14, regardless of country.
The Photos app gains AI-powered editing tools for more precise retouching. The Liquid Glass interface gets deeper customisation, including transparency controls. Security and parental-control features are also expanded across the board.
The EU gap
Siri AI is unavailable in EU countries at launch, tied to compliance delays under the Digital Markets Act. Apple has not given a firm date for European availability. For context, French and Spanish language support for Siri AI is loosely pencilled in for October, but no official date has been confirmed for any EU market.
UK users sit in a similar position post-Brexit — Apple has aligned its EU regulatory compliance stance for the UK — so Siri AI won't be available there at launch either, with no timeline given.
Who can update
Compatibility is unchanged from iOS 26. Any iPhone 11 or newer — including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) — can install iOS 27. The update will be free, available through Settings on September 14. New iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models ship with iOS 27 pre-installed.
If you're in the US, the September 14 update is worth downloading for the performance gains alone. If you're in the UK or EU, the same applies — just don't expect the AI features to show up immediately.
