Xbox CEO visits Kojima Productions after swooping in to save Physint
Xbox's new CEO is wasting no time cementing the company's biggest creative bet in years. Asha Sharma visited Kojima Productions' Tokyo studio just days after Xbox announced on September 10 that it would publish Physint — the stealth-action game Sony had been funding since January 2024 before pulling out in June 2026. The visit signals that Xbox sees the Kojima relationship as more than a publishing contract.
The deal behind the photos
Sharma and Hideo Kojima posted joint photos from the meeting, both sporting Kojima Productions and Xbox hoodies. The optics are deliberate: this is the kind of personal, director-level engagement Xbox hasn't always been known for. AltChar confirmed the visit took place within days of the announcement, emphasizing how quickly Sharma moved after the deal went public.
The partnership goes further than Physint alone. Xbox is also publishing OD, Kojima's horror collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele, and Variety reports the arrangement now extends to film and television projects as well. Three months of negotiations — running from Sony's June cancellation through the September announcement — produced an unusually broad creative agreement.
Why Physint matters right now
Physint is being developed as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, and the nostalgia factor is real for anyone who spent time with Konami's spy franchises on PS2. The Konami parallel runs deeper than aesthetics: in March 2015, Konami scrubbed Kojima's name from all Metal Gear Solid V marketing and dissolved the partnership. Sony stepped in and gave Kojima the backing to found his own studio. Now, 11 years later, Sony itself has exited — reportedly unwilling to keep funding Kojima's large-scale, low-margin projects after the company announced it would discontinue physical discs in July 2026.
Xbox moving in after that exit is Sharma's first major talent play since replacing Phil Spencer as CEO in early 2026. It's a deliberate signal that the new leadership is willing to compete on creative vision, not just Game Pass subscriber numbers.
No confirmed release window exists for either Physint or OD. Analysts who follow Xbox hardware timelines put a realistic launch somewhere around 2029–2030, tied to next-generation Xbox hardware — but that is speculation, not anything Microsoft or Kojima Productions has said officially.
