007 First Light's Switch 2 port slips to March 2027

IO Interactive's spy game 007 First Light is heading to Switch 2 later than anyone hoped. The Danish studio confirmed on September 15 that the port has been pushed to March 2027 — a version that was first promised for May 2026, then bumped to "summer," and now delayed again. The reason: performance optimization on Nintendo's hybrid hardware is taking longer than planned.

The delay

IO Interactive was direct about it. In their announcement, the studio said the extra time is needed to "ensure we achieve the quality players expect," specifically calling out performance on Switch 2 as the sticking point. No frame rate targets or resolution details were shared — those specifics remain unconfirmed. per Shane the Gamer, an exact release date within March will be announced later.

This kind of slippage isn't unique to 007 First Light. Other big titles including Elden Ring and Borderlands 4 have also hit turbulence bringing demanding games to Switch 2's architecture. IO Interactive is choosing to take the time rather than ship a rough port.

The bigger picture

The delay comes as First Light continues to perform well everywhere else. The game launched May 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC and has now surpassed 4 million copies sold in under three months — generating an estimated $150 million in revenue. PS5 accounts for around 55% of sales, Steam roughly 33%, and Xbox the remainder. Switch 2 represents a distinct portable-gaming audience that IO clearly doesn't want to short-change.

Content updates are still rolling out in the meantime: new simulation missions are already live, with a New Game+ mode and a story episode featuring Lenny Kravitz's character Bawma both coming soon. IO Interactive has also confirmed plans for at least two more James Bond games following First Light's success — with Amazon MGM Studios involved in publishing future sequels.

Worth the wait?

For Switch 2 owners, March 2027 is a frustrating timeline after two missed windows. But if the alternative was a technically compromised version of an otherwise well-received game, the wait is probably the right call. Keep an eye out for a firm date announcement closer to the end of the year.
