Xiaomi unveiled its first robot dog CyberDog: this experimental open-source robot is not for everyone

Thanks to numerous leaks, we already knew in advance what to expect from today's presentation Xiaomi, but this is exactly what no one expected - the Chinese company introduced its first robot dog named CyberDog.

What is it?

Apparently, it's a Boston Dynamics analog of Spot. But if videos with four-legged robots Spot, who go for a walk or suffer kicks and punches, cause only tenderness and pity, then the CyberDog looks a little ominous. Spot has found widespread use in various services, police agencies and industries, but what is the main purpose of the CyberDog - is not quite clear yet.

The robot looks like a pet (although a little creepy), can follow its owner, perform various tricks and understand voice commands. You can also control it with an app on your smartphone.

"CyberDog can analyze its surroundings in real time, create navigation maps, determine its destination and avoid obstacles. Combined with human posture tracking and facial recognition, CyberDog can follow its owner and overcome obstacles," Xiaomi said in a press release.

CyberDog is agile enough to do backflips, can move at a trotting speed of 3.2 m/s, and weighs only 3 kg. It runs on the Nvidia Jetson Xavier AI platform and has multiple cameras and sensors, including touch sensors, a GPS module, an ultra-wide-angle fisheye lens, and an Intel RealSense D450 depth detection camera. There are also three USB-C ports and one HDMI port, which Xiaomi says can be used for hardware setup.

Can you buy it?

Xiaomi emphasizes that this is an experimental open source robot that is not yet intended for widespread distribution. They promise to release initially 1000 units for "Xiaomi fans, engineers and robotics enthusiasts." The price will be around $ 1,540. It is not yet clear how much further releases will cost.
