Sony has announced a full-frame mirrorless camera designed for drones. It is called the Sony ILX-LR1.

Here's What We Know

The camera is equipped with a 61 MP image sensor that supports 4K ULTRA HD video recording at a frame rate of 60 FPS. The identical sensor is installed in the Sony A7R V camera.

To reduce weight and reduce overall dimensions, Japanese developers have abandoned the optical stabilisation system. Probably, the stabilising suspension of the UAV should compensate for this. Due to the lack of battery Sony ILX-LR1 is powered directly from the drone.

What is interesting is that the new camera is not compatible with the Sony Airpeak S1 drone. The Japanese company tested the Sony ILX-LR1 with piloting systems developed by Skyfish and Event 38. Another limitation concerns the choice of optics, as some E mount lenses are heavy. This should be taken into consideration as well.

Price & When We Can Expect It

The Sony ILX-LR1 has been priced at $2950. The new camera will go on sale in December 2023, but will only be available in the Business-to-Business segment. Sony primarily sees industrial customers as buyers.
