James Gunn gave fans a present to celebrate Superman's birthday: he revealed the upcoming Man of Steel's costume for the first time and changed the film's title

In honour of Superman's birthday, DC Studios CEO, James Gunn, has shared changes for the upcoming comic book movie that is set to usher in a new DCU universe.

Here's What We Know

As is tradition, Gunn made an Instagram post where he wished Clark Kent a happy birthday. In the same post, the director announced that he has decided to rename the film and showed off the costume of the upcoming Superman, played by David Corenswet. The costume was not presented in its entirety, only the new design of the most famous "S" in history was shown.

"Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday (!) When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025. Happy Birthday, Clark!"

The title change means that the first comic book movie from Gunn and Safron in the DC film universe will be a unique case among recent comic book adaptations, as it doesn't have a long subtitle with a colon. Gunn has stated that the choice of the simple and striking title "Superman" was evident while the script was still being finalised, despite the large number of characters in the film. This change also emphasises that despite the presence of many other characters, the focus will always be on the one who wears the iconic 'S' on his chest.

When We Can Expect It

Superman's release date is set for July 11, 2025.
