New 'Scooby-Doo' coming soon: Matthew Lillard talks about his return to the role of Shaggy

Actor Matthew Lillard is revisiting the iconic character of Shaggy, as well as revealing details of an upcoming project in the "Scooby-Doo" franchise.

Here's What We Know

Lillard first embodied the character of Shaggy on the big screen in the early 2000s, starring in "Scooby-Doo" and its sequel "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed," alongside Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini and Frank Welker.

He also later took over the role after Casey Kasem in various live video releases and TV shows. He was temporarily replaced by Will Forte in the animated reboot of "Scoob!" in 2020.

In a recent conversation with Toonado, Lillard shared news of his return to the world of "Scooby-Doo." The actor confirms the existence of a new project related to the franchise and hints that it carries something exciting:

"I’m really excited about [Scooby-Doo]. I can’t really talk about it yet, but there’s a new project I’m associated with that will allow kids to put themselves into a Scooby-Doo adventure. That’s super fun. For me, that’s my day job. It’s my bread and butter."

Additionally, Matthew Lillard was set to return as Shaggy in Max and Cartoon Network's "Scooby-Doo And The Mystery Pups," a project that was meant to appeal to preschool-aged children and was slated for the summer of 2024. However, that project faced cancellation by WBD.

However, it looks like the new project that Lillard is currently working on will have a similar idea, with an emphasis on engaging in the adventures of Mystic Corporation with the team. This new format promises to be something new to the "Scooby-Doo" universe, and Lillard's return could catch the public's attention.

While the new project may face challenges associated with the modern era of streaming, it is hoped that it will avoid the fate of premature cancellation that has befallen some previous projects.
