Thanks to an international effort known as Seabed 2030, roughly 25% of the Earth's sea floor has been charted (23.4 percent to be precise). The project is part of a larger UN-led movement called The Ocean Decade, which relies largely on voluntary contributions of bathymetric data (or ocean topography) from governments, enterprises, and research institutions. Seabed 2030 aims to map the entire ocean floor by 2030, according to its creators, owing in part to advancements in technology and corralling data that has long been available. Seabed 2030 has added measurements for about 3.8 million square miles (roughly the size of Europe) over the last year, rather than conducting active mapping activities.

On Tuesday night, a small fleet of Cruise robotaxis in San Francisco came to a halt, causing traffic on a street in the Fillmore district to come to a standstill for several hours until employees could arrive. A Reddit post featuring a photograph of the stalled driverless cabs at Gough and Fulton streets was first noticed by TechCrunch. GM's Cruise unit, which is the maker of the self-driving car, only introduced its business taxi service in the city last week. The transportation is completely driverless and takes place on certain streets.

OpenSea, a NFT platform, announced today that it has been hacked again — this time by one of its suppliers. According to the firm, an employee of Customer.io, OpenSea's email delivery vendor, allegedly downloaded and shared stored email addresses connected with their accounts and newsletter subscriptions with an unknown third party. At least a portion of the millions of email addresses that have been compromised were those used on OpenSea accounts or received as part of its newsletter subscriptions, according to the company's head of security Cory Hardman. It does not appear that any passwords or other personal information was stolen at this time.

A California startup that is developing a smart contact lens will soon enable customers to put the lenses into their eyes for testing. Mojo Vision debuted its smart contact lenses at CES 2020, but only journalists were allowed to hold up the lens close to their eyes; they couldn't wear them. On Tuesday, Mojo Vision announced that its CEO Drew Perkins became the first person to put on a prototype feature-complete lens during an internal test. The on-eye demonstration was significant because it demonstrated that the contact lens could be utilized while being worn without any connection between them.

Apple's tense relationship with Qualcomm, which has been the company's sole supplier of 5G chips since Intel abandoned the arrangement, has long been a source of controversy. In fact, Apple acquired Intel's modem unit in order to eventually switch to in-house modems. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities who previously predicted that Apple would stop using Qualcomm modems by H2 2023, the technology isn't ready yet. Now FOSS Patents puts forth an alternative view: The problem with Apple's 5G efforts is a legal one rather than a technological one.
