U.S. Marine Corps wants more kamikaze drones due to their success in Ukraine
Effective use of barrage munitions by the Ukrainian Armed Forces is pushing the U.S. to increase its purchases of kamikaze drones.
What we know
Few weeks ago we wrote that France was considering the purchase of Switchblade barrage munitions. Now it has been revealed that the U.S. will increase its purchases of kamikaze drones for the Marine Corps in 2023.
Such drones proved successful back in 2020 during the second war between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Russian-Ukrainian war has only increased interest in bomber munitions.
The United States has already sent a total of 700 units of Phoenix Ghost and an unknown number of drone kamikaze Switchblade 300. By the way, the Russians also use barraging munitions. They are called "Lancet." Ukrainian soldiers have already shot down several such drones (1, 2, 3-4).
Barraging ammunition is of interest not only because of its capabilities, but also because of its low price. For example, the Switchblade 300 kamikaze drone costs about $6000.
