NATO fighters in Lithuania intercepted 14 Russian planes in a week

Russian planes violated airspace over the Baltic Sea several times last week.

Here's What We Know

On August 30, the Alliance lifted aircraft based in Lithuania to intercept two Russian Su-35 fighters. They flew without transponders, did not provide a flight route and refused to contact air traffic controllers. NATO aviation also intercepted an An-72 multipurpose transport aircraft. But it was flying with its transceiver unit switched on.

On the last day of summer the situation repeated. NATO again had to intercept two Su-35s and one An-72. Finally, autumn began for Alliance aviation the same way as summer ended. On September 1, two Russian Su-35s and one IL-96 violated the airspace over the Baltic Sea. Later they were joined by two more fighters. In addition, on September 1 NATO aviation flew to intercept two more Su-27s and one IL-96.
