Boeing will develop a modular air-to-air missile for U.S. fighters

Boeing will be able to realize its Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile concept unveiled in 2021.

Here's What We Know

The American aircraft manufacturer has signed an agreement with the United States Air Force Research Laboratory. The cost of the contract was $9.8 million, but the details are kept secret.

However, it is known that the agreement is focused on providing support for Compact Air-to-Air Missile and Extended Range Air-to-Air Missile systems respectively. Work on the contract will take place in St. Louis and must be completed by Sept. 28, 2027.

The Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile includes a launcher and an acceleration unit. The tail unit is responsible for lifting and accelerating the projectile, while the rocket motor is responsible for delivery to the target. The modularity will allow the missiles to be assembled in the field depending on mission objectives. For example, to reduce or increase range.
