US, China and dozens more countries want to limit military use of AI along the lines of nuclear and chemical weapons

Dozens of countries, including the United States and China, intend to restrict the use of artificial intelligence in military conflicts. They want to equate AI with nuclear and chemical weapons.

Here's What We Know

More than 60 countries during a conference in The Hague have called for international rules that would limit the use of artificial intelligence in military conflicts. China was invited to the conference as one of the world leaders in AI. The Russians were not invited to The Hague.

2,000 representatives of countries and technology companies will form a commission that will try to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in wars. Participants will soon begin work on forming basic principles.

General Joerg Vollmer, a former NATO commander, believes that decisions on the battlefield must be made by human beings and be responsible for them. It is also argued that artificial intelligence may have "unintended consequences" for humanity.
