Sweden does not want to transfer JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine, but intends to sell the planes to the Philippines

The Philippines intends to buy a batch of fourth-generation JAS 39 Gripen fighters produced by Sweden's Saab. Previously, Sweden refused to send the planes to Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

According to Infodefensa, the defence ministers of the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding during a meeting in Singapore. Late last month, Lieutenant General Stephen Parreno, head of the Philippine Air Force, visited Saab's facilities in Sweden.

The purchase of the JAS 39 Gripen will be part of the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The country's air force currently operates a dozen FA-50PH light aircraft manufactured by South Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

The Philippines also intends to buy American upgraded F-16 Fighting Falcon Block 70/72 fighters. The purchase of the JAS 39 Gripen will not affect the desire to order Lockheed Martin jets.
