It's Done: GTA 6 Confirmed, Rockstar Says It's in Development

After years of rumors and reports, Rockstar has confirmed that it is working on a new Grand Theft Auto game and stated that the process is "well underway".

In a new press release, a Rockstar spokesperson wrote:

“Given the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have asked us about the newest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we take on, our goal is always to go far beyond what we've done before - and we're happy to confirm that active development for the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more information as soon as we are ready. So please stay tuned to Rockstar Newswire for official details. On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and can't wait to step into the future with you!”

As for the game itself, Rockstar has nothing more to say right now and no word on when it will reveal more. Previous rumors have suggested that the initial version of GTA 6 may be smaller than GTA 5 and updates will be used over time to add content. Other reports say the game will return to a Miami-inspired Vice City setting.

Last year, Rockstar patented a new NPC navigation system that some say will be used in the next GTA. The system is intended to be more realistic on the road, to create more realistic road users - with the express purpose of making it useful in a "multiplayer online gaming community".

It will be the first modern GTA game released since the departure of Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who helped write all GTA games from 2 to 5, as well as the Red Dead, Bully and Max Payne 3 series. His brother, Sam Houser, remains on the project.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The first part of Grand Theft Auto was released for MS-DOS, PlayStation and Windows PC in 1997. After two installments and spin-offs, Rockstar turned its crime streak around with the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 in 2001, an open-world 3D action game. Adventure game that spawned two best-selling sequels: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Grand Theft Auto 4 followed in 2008. And then the world saw one of the most popular games of all time. Grand Theft Auto 5.
